BALTIMORE, Md. - Norfolk State swept its series against Morgan State by defeating the Bears, 4-2 in game one and 1-0 in game two, of a Sunday doubleheader at Lois T. Murray Field.
The Spartans (18-16, 11-4 MEAC) extended their win streak to three games with the victory over the Bears (13-23, 9-6 MEAC) on the road. Norfolk State currently sits in second place in the MEAC standings, behind preseason-favorites Howard (19-17, 13-1 MEAC).
Norfolk State defeated the Bears in game one behind multi-hit performances by Qween Edmonds and Bryant. Bryant, Shorts, Morris, and Johnson each secured RBIs in game one as well.
Amaya McPherson received the win after she pitched her first collegiate shutout. She pitched 7.0 innings, allowing only five hits with no earned runs against 25 batters faced.
Extra-base hits from Kailey Bryant (triple) and Emory Shorts (double) scored the first run of the game for the Spartans in the fourth innings, cutting into an early deficit.
Maya Johnson produced an RBI single to tie the game for Norfolk State, 2-2, in the same inning.
After scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Bears never scored again through eight consecutive innings.
With Victoria Taylor on second, Bryant hit an RBI double to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead. An insurance run scored by Bryant came on a sacrifice bunt by Maddy Morris.
The Spartans won game two by capitalizing on errors by the Bears in the top of the second inning of the 1-0 win.
Shorts led off the second, reaching on an error by the Bears'. Shorts reached second on a groundout, before stealing third to put herself in scoring position for the Spartans with only one out.
The Bears posted another error which allowed Shorts to come home, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans host Hampton for the annual Battle of the Bay game on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Norfolk State will play Coppin State on Friday, Apr. 18 to Saturday, Apr. 19, celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness during the series.
