NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State head softball coach Angie Nicholson has been named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Coach of the Year, as six Spartans earned All-MEAC laurels at the MEAC Softball award ceremony on Tuesday evening.
Nicholson claimed MEAC Coach of the Year honors to become only the second coach in Norfolk State's program history to receive the award honors after James Inzana achieved the feat in 2019 and 2021.
Nicholson led the Spartans team to a 21-21 regular season record in her first season at NSU, including a 14-7 mark in the MEAC. She produced the best single-season turnaround in Norfolk State's Division I program history, winning 17 more games than the previous year.
Johnson is one of the most efficient defenders in the MEAC, ranking top five in the conference in fielding percentage (.981), putouts (260), and fielding double plays (7). She leads the team in home runs (3), which is tied for third in the MEAC. She posted five RBIs and two doubles in a 13-4 win over Hampton.
Turner leads the Spartans in stolen bases (23), ranking second in the MEAC in the category. One of only three athletes in the MEAC with 20 or more stolen bases, she has also hit .286 on the year, producing five multi-hit and two multi-RBI performances.
Edmonds is a two-time MEAC Player of the Week, leading the team in batting average (.348), hits (47), and total bases (68). She ranks second in the MEAC in hits and second in triples (5). She tallied three hits, two RBIs, a triple and a home run in a 9-1 win over Coppin State.
Bryant leads the team in triples (6), RBIs (22), and slugging percentage (.504), hitting .281 on the year with and accruing a six-game hitting streak from Mar. 22-30. She posted a 4-2 pitching record with a 4.46 ERA on the mound, racking up 18 strikeouts.
Tyler has made 15 pitching appearances, sporting the lowest ERA on the team (2.39). Tyler has pitched six complete games in 11 starts, recording two shutouts and 45 strikeouts in 64.0 innings. Her best pitching performance this season came against Maryland Eastern Shore on Apr. 5, holding the Hawks to no runs, two hits, to go along with six strikeouts.
McPherson produced a 3.09 ERA in 23 appearances with 15 starts, racking up nine wins – the most for any freshman in the MEAC. McPherson leads the team with 57 strikeouts, fanning a career-high seven batters against UMES.
Norfolk State opens the 2025 MEAC Softball Championship as the second seed, taking on the winner of the No. 3 Delaware State and No. 6 South Carolina State matchup on Wednesday, May 7 at 5 p.m.
