Spartans’ Turnaround Season Ends in 11-1 MEAC Tournament Loss to SCSU

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State softball team concluded its remarkable 2025 season against South Carolina State on Friday, falling 11-1 in five innings in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament.

The Spartans finished the season 22-23 in MEAC Coach of the Year Angie Nicholson's first season at the helm. 

The Bulldogs started off fast, scoring in the opening frame on a solo home run by MEAC Player of the Year Taylor Ames-Alexander. 

The Bulldogs added two runs in both the second and third innings to increase their lead to 5-0.

Norfolk State's defense halted SCSU from scoring any more runs in the top of the third behind a crucial 5-4-3 double play between Kira Turner, Emory Shorts, and Maya JohnsonKailey Bryant struck out the next batter swinging to end the inning.

Bryant tallied two hits for the day, her second multi-hit performance of the tournament. She recorded two hits in a 4-3 loss to Delaware State in game one of the tournament on Wednesday as well.

The Bulldogs tallied six runs on six hits in the fourth to take an 11-0 lead.

Aniyah Michalak put the Spartans on the board in the fourth inning, crossing home plate whilst Bristyl Riddick simultaneously reached on a fielding error, cutting into the Bulldogs' lead, 11-1.

Both teams went scoreless in the fifth inning to end the game.

2025 SPARTAN ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • Head Coach Angie Nicholson became only the second coach in program history to win MEAC Coach of the Year honors
  • Won 18 more games in 2025 (22-23) than 2024 (4-46), for a program best turnaround in its Division I history
  • Secured the second seed in the conference standings behind a 14-7 record
  • Led conference with a 3.37 ERA and ranked second in earned runs allowed (134)
  • Totaled most stolen bases in the program's Division I history (132)
  • Landed six student-athletes on All-MEAC Teams – five on All-MEAC Second Team and one on All-MEAC Third Team
