NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Melody M. Webb has named Patricia Porter-Mayfield Deputy Athletics Director. Porter-Mayfield is a veteran administrator with more than 18 years in collegiate athletics, and she joins the Spartans' senior leadership team.
Porter-Mayfield's career spans conference leadership, strategic communications, corporate partnerships and revenue generation, and includes work in professional sports, higher education and the public sector. She has spent most of it with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, where she held senior leadership roles in two stints.
"Patricia knows the MEAC, she knows HBCU athletics and she understands what it takes to compete at the highest level," Webb said. "Her experience in external relations, corporate partnerships and strategic operations will be an asset as we continue to grow our resources and elevate the student-athlete experience at Norfolk State. We are excited to welcome her to the Spartan Family."
In her most recent role with the MEAC, Porter-Mayfield served as Associate Commissioner for External Relations and Chief of Staff. She oversaw communications, corporate partnerships, championship operations and strategic initiatives for the conference's member institutions. She worked closely with campus leaders, corporate partners and outside stakeholders to advance conference priorities and raise the profile of MEAC schools and student-athletes.
She returned to the conference in 2023. Her first stint there ran from 2006 to 2016, when she served as Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations and Marketing and directed communications, marketing and championship operations.
She has also held leadership and communications positions at Hampton University, Johnson C. Smith University, the NBA Development League (now the NBA G League) and Southwest Basketball LLC. At Johnson C. Smith, her alma mater, she served as sports information director and senior woman administrator.
"I am excited to join Norfolk State Athletics and have tremendous respect for Dr. Webb's leadership and vision, the talented athletics staff, and the winning tradition established here," Porter-Mayfield said. "I look forward to bringing my experience and leadership to this exceptional team as we continue to build upon its success."
Porter-Mayfield earned her bachelor's degree in physical education, with a concentration in sports management, from Johnson C. Smith. She also holds an MBA and a master's degree in executive leadership from Liberty University, where she is pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration in project management.
