NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State goes after a piece of conference history Friday, as the Spartan men race for a seventh consecutive MEAC Cross Country Championship at the WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C. The men's 8K goes off at 11 a.m., hosted by North Carolina Central.
A win would also give Norfolk State its eighth conference title in nine years. The 2020 championship race was canceled due to COVID-19.

THE CASE FOR NORFOLK STATE
The Spartans closed the regular season with their strongest team performance of the fall, placing fourth in a 13-team field at the Panorama Farms Invitational on Oct. 16 with 112 points — behind only Virginia Tech (31), Virginia (51) and Wingate (75), and ahead of UMBC, Charlotte, American and Marquette.
More to the point for Friday: Norfolk State has handled its conference competition head to head all fall. The Spartans' 112 points at Panorama Farms sat well clear of Delaware State (256), with Coppin State also in the field. Back on Sept. 11 at the Virginia Invitational, Norfolk State took fourth with 93 points while Howard trailed at 185.
Norfolk State ran a 25:12 team average at Panorama Farms and covered its scoring five in 1:15.9, the tightest pack the Spartans have put together this season.
BY THE NUMBERS: MEAC PERFORMANCE LIST
Norfolk State enters Friday with the deepest group in the league by season-best 8K time.
Seven Spartans rank among the MEAC's top 15 performers this fall — and every Norfolk State runner on the conference performance list sits inside that top 15. Four are in the top 10.
No other MEAC program has more than three runners in the top 15. Maryland Eastern Shore places three in the top seven, and Delaware State has three in the top 13.
The individual race at the front should be the morning's best story. Kipruto's 24:10.4 is the second-fastest 8K in the conference this season, 2.4 seconds behind North Carolina Central's Aaron Alukunyang (24:08.0), who has gone unbeaten this fall and will run on his program's home course. South Carolina State's Tinashe Bure (24:12.7) sits third, putting all three within 4.7 seconds of one another on paper.

CLINTON KIPRUTO
The freshman from Kapsabet, Kenya, has been the story of the Spartans' fall. Kipruto has earned four MEAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors, the first in his collegiate debut at the Spider Alumni Open, where he won the individual title wire to wire.
He won his first two collegiate races outright. After taking the Spider Alumni Open, Kipruto ran from the front again at the Virginia Invitational, moving through 5K in 14:53.5 and winning the 6,000-meter race in a personal-best 17:39.0 — 26.5 seconds faster than his opening mark over the same distance, and the only runner outside the North Carolina lineup to crack the top five.
He then placed fifth in the Men's College Gold 8K at the Paul Short Run in 24:10.4, leading at both the three- and four-mile marks and finishing 10.6 seconds behind the individual champion in a 35-team field. Two weeks later he was fifth again at Panorama Farms in 24:35.4, the top MEAC finisher in the race.
THE REST OF THE LINEUP
Junior Ian Kimutai has settled in as the Spartans' consistent No. 2, taking 13th at Panorama Farms in 24:47.9. Sophomore Daniel Mathenge (25:20.7) and junior Mohammed Mrahi (25:27.2) followed as the third and fourth scorers.
Junior Lewis Too returns as the defending MEAC individual champion after winning the 2025 title. His season best of 25:51.3 came at Panorama Farms, where he was fifth across for the Spartans — but Too has already proven he can win this race, and a championship-day return to form would change the math at the front.
Sophomore Jemmel Green (25:55.9) and junior Mathew Kipkoech (26:09.4) round out a group that has gone seven deep all season.
That depth showed up early. Every Spartan who finished at the Virginia Invitational set a personal best, and Mathenge, Too and Kimutai came across within 6.8 seconds of one another.
QUOTING HEAD COACH KENNETH GILES
"Clinton has come into the program and provided the strong number one runner that I expected him to be and has made the adjustment to the D-I level very quickly," said director of track and field programs Kenneth Giles.
"Chasing the seventh consecutive conference championship places another target on our back. However, we embrace the challenge, and in the new age of collegiate athletics this shows that a super team can still be assembled."
Giles was named the MEAC's Most Outstanding Coach after last year's championship and Cross Country Coach of the Year by HBCU Sports in July.
