Daroszewska Claims MEAC Singles Title at MEAC Tennis Invitational

CARY, N.C. – Norfolk State's Julia Daroszewska won the women's singles championship at the MEAC Tennis Invitational on Sunday at Cary Tennis Park. In the final, she outlasted No. 2 seed Michaela Stephens of Morgan State, 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (9-7).

Daroszewska was unseeded and beat three seeded players on the way to the title. In Friday's quarterfinals she beat No. 3 seed Tyler Williams of Morgan State 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. In Saturday's semifinals she took down top seed Pimmada Thongkum of South Carolina State 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. She then won a third-set tiebreaker in the final against Stephens.

Three of her five matches went the distance. That run started Friday morning, when she came back from a set down against Howard's Franchesca Brown and won two straight tiebreakers, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4).

Teammate Yuliya Yurkova, the No. 4 seed, also reached the singles semifinals. She fell to Stephens 6-1, 7-5 on Saturday.

Daroszewska and Yurkova, the No. 2 seed in women's doubles, made it to the doubles semifinals as well. They beat Delaware State's Celia Torrelles Aguila and Maite Bou Safont 6-2, 6-2  in the quarterfinals. In the semis they won the first set 6-1 against North Carolina Central's Valentina De Aquino Monsanto and Carlota Rodriguez Sanchez, but the NCCU pair rallied for a 1-6, 7-5, 10-3 win and went on to take the doubles title.

On the men's side, No. 3 seed Szymon Malecki reached the singles semifinals, where he lost 7-5, 6-4 to Howard's Michael Major.

Malecki and Marcin Andrzejczak, the No. 3 seed in doubles, beat North Carolina Central's Sergio Lopez Guillen and Mark Nawa 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 in the quarterfinals. They then fell 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals to the eventual champions, top seeds Andrii Borodatiuk and Iliyas Maratuly of South Carolina State.

Marcin Dojczynski and Kasper Kulpa won their opening doubles match and reached the quarterfinals, where they lost to No. 2 seed Julius Augunas and Alan Aiukhanov of SC State 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
