Spartans Drop Pair to Towson in Doubleheader

NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State baseball team fell 12-3 and 28-4 (F/7) to Towson in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

Norfolk State dropped to 1-2 on the season, while Towson improved to 2-1.

GAME ONE: NORFOLK STATE 3, TOWSON 12

Norfolk State threatened early, putting two runners on base in the first inning after Jayden Israel doubled and Brendan Burke drew a walk, but the Spartans came away empty.

Towson opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by Frank Adamski, bringing home Keldrin Rodriguez for a 1-0 lead.

Israel notched his second double of the game in the third inning but was left stranded as the Tigers maintained their one-run advantage. Norfolk State evened the score in the sixth inning when Justin Journette, the program's all-time home run leader, launched a solo homer to tie the game at 1-1.

Towson capitalized on a Norfolk State error in the seventh inning, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Spartans responded in the bottom half of the inning as Thomas Ealey singled to open the frame and Cameron Mazell drove him in with an RBI double.

The Tigers broke the game open in the eighth inning, scoring six runs on four hits to extend the lead to 10-2. Norfolk State added its final run in the ninth when Mason Mompoint doubled home Josiah Harrison, but Towson closed out the 12-3 victory.

GAME 2: NORFOLK STATE 4 TOWSON 28 (F/7)

Towson jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.

Norfolk State answered in the bottom half as Jalan Jones reached base after being hit by a pitch, stole second, and advanced to third on a balk. Ealey followed with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Tigers added two runs in the second inning to push the lead to 5-1. Norfolk State responded again when Jones doubled to drive in Sean Stewart, trimming the margin to 5-2 after two innings.

The Spartans scored their final two runs later in the game on a Towson error that allowed Israel and Ealey to cross the plate. Towson pulled away to secure the 28-4 win in seven innings.
