Spartans Women's Tennis Earn Historic Win Over East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team earned a historic result Friday evening, rallying for a 4-3 victory over East Carolina — the program's first win over the Pirates. 

How It Happened 

East Carolina grabbed the early advantage, claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Angelina Maniawska and Elena Martinez Prado secured Norfolk State's lone doubles victory, 7-5, at the No. 2 flight. 

Trailing 1-0 entering singles play, the Spartans faced an even bigger deficit after ECU victories at No. 2 and No. 6 pushed the lead to 3-0. Kim Auerswald defeated Ines Sabadie 6-1, 6-1, and Reese Calvo topped Kayla Kennedy 6-0, 6-1. 

Norfolk State responded with four straight wins to complete the comeback. 

Sabina Iurea put the Spartans on the board with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, followed by Yuliya Yurkova's 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1. Angelina Maniawska added another point at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 7-5 decision. 

Elena Martinez Prado clinched the match in dramatic fashion at No. 3 singles, battling back for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory to secure the 4-3 triumph.
