Journette Homers in Series Opener Against Mount St. Mary’s

NORFOLK, Va. ---- The Norfolk State baseball team dropped a 13-6 decision to Mount St. Mary's on Friday afternoon in the opener of a three-game series at Marty L. Miller Field.

Norfolk State slipped to 2-6 on the season, while Mount St. Mary's improved to 3-5. Ethan Blakeney took the loss for the Spartans, falling to 1-2, and Serigne Sarre earned the win to move to 1-0.

Mount St. Mary's jumped out early with three runs on three hits in the second inning. Norfolk State worked out of the frame after leaving two runners in scoring position.

The Mountaineers added to their lead in the third, using a pair of hits and a Norfolk State error to score twice. The Spartans answered in the bottom half of the inning when Cameron Mazell drew a walk, and Sean Stewart singled. Justin Journette brought both runners home on a ball misplayed in the field, trimming the deficit to 5-2.

Mount St. Mary's seized control in the fourth inning, capitalizing on three hits and two Norfolk State errors to push across six runs and extend the lead to 11-2. The Mountaineers added another run in the sixth on an RBI single.

Norfolk State looked to build momentum in the sixth when Journette doubled to right field, but the Spartans stranded him on base. Jaydan Israel drove in a run with a single to right in the seventh, allowing Mazell to score his second run of the game.

Mount St. Mary's answered in the eighth with a solo home run to left field to stretch the margin to 13-3.

The Spartans closed the scoring in the ninth. Kydese Queen crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and Journette followed one batter later with a two-run homer to pull Norfolk State within five, before Mount St. Mary's recorded the final out to secure the win.
