NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team secured the series victory Sunday afternoon with a 5-1 win over Saint Peter's, improving to 7-4 overall and taking two of three games from the Peacocks.
Norfolk State worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first, then immediately capitalized in the bottom half. Qween Edmonds opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly from Maddy Morris, before Kailey Bryant crossed the plate on an Aniyah Michalak double to center field. Michalak later scored on a wild pitch to give the Spartans an early 3-0 advantage.
Both teams settled in defensively over the next three innings, holding each other scoreless until Saint Peter's pushed across a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Olivia Christopher.
The Spartans answered in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 5-1. Bristyl Riddick singled through the left side with the bases loaded to score Bryant, and Morris later came home during a Julia Kearney at-bat after a Peacock fielding error.
Norfolk State closed the door over the final two innings to seal the victory and the series.
Morris earned the complete-game win in the circle, improving to 3-2 on the season. She allowed one earned run while striking out four and walking one across 29 batters faced.
At the plate, Bryant went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Morris also finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Michalak, Riddick, Peyton Moran, and Maya Johnson each recorded hits, with Riddick and Kearney driving in runs.
