Spartans Hit Three Home Runs, Fall to VMI in Midweek Action

NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State baseball team fell 15-10 to VMI on Wednesday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
 
Norfolk State dropped to 2-13 on the season, while VMI improved to 15-2. Nyenati Snoh (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Spartans.
 
Josiah Harrison started for Norfolk State. Snoh, James Godfrey, Sean Harris-Walter, Tyler Mitchell, and Yasseel Samboy also pitched in relief. Harrison and Mitchell each struck out three batters, while Snoh and Samboy recorded two strikeouts apiece.
 
Justin Journette led Norfolk State at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Thomas Ealey added three hits and two RBIs, and Josiah Harrison hit a grand slam for four RBIs. Jaydan Israel scored three runs and stole two bases, while Brendan Burke added a double as the Spartans finished with 10 hits.
 
Norfolk State struck first in the bottom of the first. Israel reached base and later scored on an Ealey single to left field. Journette followed with a two-RBI home run to right field, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
 
VMI responded in the top of the second with seven runs, including a grand slam to center, to take a 7-3 lead. The Keydets extended their lead to 10-3 in the third on four hits and a Norfolk State error.
 
Norfolk State answered in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases with one out, Harrison launched a grand slam to right field, cutting the deficit to 10-7. The Spartans added another run in the fourth when Ealey's RBI single scored Hunter Gillespie.
 
NSU held VMI scoreless until the sixth, when the Keydets scored two runs on three hits to push their lead to 12-8. Journette hit his second home run of the day in the bottom of the inning, trimming the lead to 12-10.
 
VMI walked in a run in the top of the seventh, but Mitchell struck out two batters to escape the inning with the bases loaded. The Keydets scored two more runs in the eighth on a two-RBI double to right-center, sealing the 15-10 win.

The Spartans return to NEC play, hosting Central Connecticut State in a three-game series at Marty L. Miller Field. Game one is Friday, March 13, at 3 p.m.
