GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Norfolk State women's tennis team secured a hard-fought road victory on Wednesday afternoon, edging the Aggies of North Carolina A&T 4-3 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Courts.
North Carolina A&T claimed the early advantage by capturing the doubles point.
Yana Klimchuk and
Yuliya Yurkova opened play with a convincing 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Hana El Sherif and Valeriia Fomenko. North Carolina A&T responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles taking control of momentum early in the contest.
The match shifted in singles play as the Spartans battled across the lineup to earn the four points needed for the team victory.
At No. 2 singles,
Regina Urbiola delivered a strong performance, defeating Randy Rakotoarilala 6-1, 7-5 to give Norfolk State its first singles point.
The Spartans continued to build momentum when
Yuliya Yurkova battled back at No. 1 singles, rallying after dropping the opening set to defeat Hana El Sherif 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 and tie the match.
Norfolk State added another key point at No. 5 singles where
Elena Martinez Prado outlasted Tabeth Tadoum in a three-set battle, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, putting the Spartans on the brink of victory.
The decisive point came by default at No. 4 singles, where
Yana Klimchuk was awarded the win when North Carolina A&T's Dorsa Cheraghi was forced to retire, securing the 4-3 team victory for the Spartans.
North Carolina A&T earned its points at No. 3 singles, where Juana Gomez Weiss defeated
Angelina Maniawska, and at No. 6 singles, where Flavia Villegas topped
Irina Iurea.
The win marked a tightly contested matchup between the programs, with Norfolk State claiming the narrowest margin of victory in the series at 4-3.
