NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State baseball team used a four-run fourth inning and held off a late rally to defeat Central Connecticut State 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
Norfolk State improved to 4-14 with the win, while Central Connecticut State fell to 5-5.
CJ Patterson (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Spartans, while
Yasseel Samboy recorded his second save of the season.
Jaydan Israel led the Spartans at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs.
Emmett Jefferson added three hits and scored two runs, while
Josiah Harrison recorded two hits and an RBI.
Patterson allowed two runs on six hits and struck out five over three innings of relief to secure the win.
Thomas Ealey started for Norfolk State and struck out three over two scoreless innings.
Norfolk State struck first in the opening inning. Israel doubled down the right-field line and later scored on Harrison's RBI single to right field, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Norfolk State added another run in the second inning when Jefferson doubled to left field and later scored on
Hunter Gillespie's sacrifice fly to center field to make it 2-0.

Ryan Hoeft drew a walk and Jefferson singled to put two runners on before Israel launched a three-run home run to right field, extending the Spartans' lead to 5-0. Ealey later scored on a wild pitch to cap the inning and push the advantage to 6-0.
Central Connecticut State responded with two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout and an RBI single, trimming the deficit to 6-2. The Blue Devils continued to chip away in the sixth inning, adding a run on an RBI single and another on a wild pitch to cut the Norfolk State lead to 6-4.
Central Connecticut State added one more run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch, bringing the Blue Devils within one. Samboy closed the game for the Spartans, striking out two over two innings and recording the final three outs to secure his second save of the season.

Norfolk State returns to action on Wednesday, March 18, against cross-town rival Old Dominion at the Ellmer Family Baseball Complex in Norfolk. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
