PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Norfolk State softball team swept Saturday's doubleheader at Maryland Eastern Shore, claiming a 5-0 victory in game one before earning a 10-5 win in game two. The Spartans improve to 12-10 overall and 4-1 in MEAC play with one game remaining in the three-game series.
Four different Spartans recorded home runs on the day, including Maddy Morris, Maya Johnson, Aniyah Michalak, and Bristyl Riddick. Norfolk State's 10 runs in game two marked its highest offensive output of the season.
GAME 1 – NORFOLK STATE 5, MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE 0
Norfolk State wasted no time jumping ahead, scoring four runs in the opening inning to take early control. Kailey Bryant crossed the plate first on an RBI single from Aniyah Michalak before Michalak scored on a double by Bristyl Riddick. Maya Johnson capped the inning with a two-run homer to right field, driving in Riddick and extending the lead to 4-0.
The Spartans added an insurance run in the third inning when Maddy Morris launched a solo home run over the left field wall.
Morris was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while striking out eight. She limited the Hawks to just four hits, including only three over the final two innings, as Norfolk State preserved the shutout.
Johnson, Morris, and Michalak each tallied two hits, while Johnson led the team with two RBIs. Five different Spartans scored in the victory.
GAME 2 – NORFOLK STATE 10, MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE 5
The Spartans carried their momentum into game two, again plating four runs in the first inning. Bryant scored on a double by Morris before Riddick delivered a three-run home run to give NSU a 4-0 advantage.
Norfolk State extended its lead with a run in the second inning as Bryant drove in Kachelle Refour with a single. Riddick added another RBI in the third with a double to score Michalak, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Maryland Eastern Shore responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and added another in the fourth, but the Spartans continued to apply pressure. In the fourth inning, Bryant tripled to bring home Qween Edmonds and later scored on a groundout by Michalak to make it 8-2.
After a scoreless fifth inning, NSU added to its lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from McKaley Kohn. Michalak capped the scoring for Norfolk State with a solo home run in the seventh. The Hawks added two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Spartans secured the 10-5 win.
Riddick led the offense with a perfect 4-for-4 performance, driving in four runs and scoring once. Bryant added three hits with two runs and two RBIs, while Michalak recorded two hits and scored four times.
