PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Norfolk State softball team completed the series sweep over Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday afternoon, rallying for a 5-4 come-from-behind victory at Hawk Stadium.
With the win, Norfolk State improves to 13-10 overall and 5-1 in MEAC play, while UMES drops to 8-19 (1-5 MEAC).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Qween Edmonds led the Spartans at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Maya Johnson, Amaya McPherson, and Julia Kearney each added two hits in the win.
Jaiden Henderson earned the victory in the circle, tossing six innings while allowing two runs on five hits and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Maryland Eastern Shore struck first, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of doubles.
Norfolk State responded in the second inning when Julia Kearney delivered an RBI double to score Amaya McPherson, trimming the deficit to 2-1.
The Spartans evened the score in the third inning as Aniyah Michalak doubled home Qween Edmonds to make it 2-2.
The Hawks answered in the bottom half of the inning, reclaiming a 4-2 lead. Clarke Calvin hit a solo home run to center field, and another run scored on a single.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Norfolk State rallied in the fifth. Maya Johnson tied the game with a two-run double, bringing home Edmonds and Kailey Bryant. Three batters later, McPherson delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Johnson and giving the Spartans their first lead of the day at 5-4.
UMES threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings, putting multiple runners on base, but Norfolk State's defense held firm to secure the comeback victory and series sweep.

Norfolk State returns home for a five-game homestand this week, beginning with a midweek doubleheader against Mid-Atlantic Christian on Wednesday, March 25, at 2 and 4 p.m. The Spartans will then host North Carolina Central for a three-game MEAC series over the weekend.
