Record Day in the Circle Leads Spartans to Doubleheader Sweep

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team extended its win streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep of Mid-Atlantic Christian, earning 7-0 and 11-2 (5 innings) victories on Wednesday at TowneBank Field. The Spartans improve to 15-10 overall.

Kailey Bryant delivered a historic performance in game one, tossing a complete-game shutout while setting a new program single-game record with 13 strikeouts. In game two, Savannah Stover earned her first collegiate victory, pitching five innings in the run-rule win.


GAME 1 – NORFOLK STATE 7, MID-ATLANTIC CHRISTIAN 0

Norfolk State jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Qween Edmonds scored the game's first run on an RBI single by Bryant, who later crossed the plate on a base hit from Aniyah Michalak. Michalak then came home on a single by Amaya McPherson to cap the inning.

Bryant was dominant in the circle, striking out the side in the second inning and allowing just three baserunners through the first three frames.

The Spartans added three more runs in the third inning. Bristyl Riddick scored on a fielder's choice by McKaley Kohn, while Maya Johnson and Kohn later came home on consecutive singles from Edmonds and Bryant to extend the lead to 6-0.

NSU tacked on a final run in the sixth inning when Riddick drove in Bryant with a single up the middle.

Bryant closed out the game in dominant fashion, striking out the side in the seventh to secure the shutout and set the program record with her 13th strikeout.


GAME 2 – NORFOLK STATE 11, MID-ATLANTIC CHRISTIAN 2 (5 innings)

Mid-Atlantic Christian struck first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on a groundout double play.

Norfolk State responded in a big way in the second inning, plating five runs to take control. Jordan Knott scored on an RBI single from Stover before McKaley Kohn and Stover both crossed the plate following a fielding error. Back-to-back triples from Bryant and Ennovi Sandoval brought in two more runs, giving the Spartans a 5-1 advantage.

Both teams added a run in the third inning, with Stover delivering another RBI single to score Kohn and extend the lead to 6-2.

After a scoreless fourth inning, NSU put the game away in the fifth with five more runs. RBI singles from Maya Johnson and Stover plated the first two runs before Bryant added another with a base hit. Sandoval delivered the final blow with a walk-off two-run single down the left field line, sealing the 11-2 run-rule victory.


UP NEXT

Norfolk State returns to TowneBank Field this weekend for a three-game MEAC series against North Carolina Central. The teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m., followed by a Sunday finale at 12 p.m.
