NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State softball standouts Maddy Morris and Samantha Stevenson earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) weekly honors after strong performances during the Spartan Round Up against North Dakota, FDU, and Holy Cross.
The MEAC named Morris Player of the Week while Stevenson was selected as Rookie of the Week.
Morris made an impact both at the plate and in the circle for the Spartans. She hit .333 (5-for-15) with four runs scored and six RBI, recording hits in four consecutive games during the tournament. Morris added a home run and three walks while posting a .444 on-base percentage and striking out just twice in 15 at-bats.
In the circle, Morris went 1-1 across 6.2 innings with six strikeouts. She earned the win against Holy Cross, pitching 4.2 innings while allowing three runs and striking out three. Morris also contributed two innings of relief against FDU, striking out three while helping limit scoring opportunities late in the contest. Across both appearances, she allowed just six hits while providing key innings for the Spartans' pitching staff.
Stevenson appeared in three games in the circle during the Spartan Round Up, totaling 9.2 innings of work. She turned in her strongest outing against FDU, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits to keep the Knights off the scoreboard. Stevenson also pitched three innings against North Dakota, surrendering just one earned run while striking out two. Over the course of the weekend, she recorded two outings of three or more innings, providing valuable depth for the Spartans' pitching staff during tournament play.
Norfolk State returns to action this week with four games, beginning with a midweek matchup against Longwood on Wednesday before opening MEAC play against Delaware State on Saturday with a doubleheader.
