BALTIMORE, Md. – The Norfolk State softball team dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Coppin State on Sunday afternoon at the CSU Softball Complex, concluding the three-game series.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 18-17 overall and 8-7 in MEAC play, while Coppin State improves to 8-17 (7-8 MEAC).
FINAL – COPPIN STATE 4, NORFOLK STATE 3
Coppin State struck first in the second inning, plating three runs on a home run to left field by Yasmin Burrell.
The Eagles added another run in the third on an RBI single to extend their lead to 4-0.
Norfolk State responded in the fourth inning when Maya Johnson launched a solo home run to left center, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
The Spartans continued to chip away in the fifth. Kailey Bryant delivered an RBI triple to score Qween Edmonds before coming home on a sacrifice fly from Maddy Morris, trimming the margin to 4-3.
Norfolk State threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings, putting runners on base, but was unable to bring the tying run across as Coppin State held on for the win.
Bryant led the Spartans at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple, one RBI, and one run scored. Johnson added a home run, while Kachelle Refour recorded two hits.
Bryant (5-6) also took the loss in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

Norfolk State returns home next weekend to host Morgan State for its final regular season home series on April 18-19. The teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., followed by the series finale on Sunday. The Spartans will also honor senior Maya Johnson in a pregame ceremony.
