Norfolk State Capitalizes on Five-Run Eighth Inning in 9-7 Win Against New Haven

NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State baseball team earned a 9-7 victory over New Haven in Northeast Conference action on Friday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
 
Norfolk State improved to 13-21 overall (10-13 NEC), while New Haven fell to 5-24 (4-12 NEC). Yasseel Samboy (4-1) picked up the win in relief, while Jace Vanvalkneburg (2-1) took the loss.
 
Jaydan Israel led the Spartans at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Brendan Burke followed, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Cameron Mazell added a 2-for-2 effort with two runs scored and two walks, while Ryan Hoeft chipped in two hits.
 
Ethan Blakeney got the start for Norfolk State, striking out six over six innings. CJ Patterson tossed a scoreless seventh inning, and Samboy closed the game with two innings of work.
 
New Haven struck first in the opening inning, taking advantage of a passed ball to grab a 1-0 lead. Norfolk State responded in the second inning with three runs. Burke delivered an RBI single to score Mazell, and Israel followed with a two-RBI single to give the Spartans a 3-1 advantage.
 
The Chargers trimmed the deficit in the third inning with an RBI double before Norfolk State answered in the bottom half. Burke drove in another run with a single, extending the lead to 4-2. New Haven evened the score in the fourth inning, using a solo home run and an RBI double to tie the game at 4-4.
 
Both teams remained scoreless until the eighth inning, when Norfolk State erupted for five runs. Burke sparked the rally with an RBI single, and the Spartans capitalized on two New Haven errors to extend the lead. Gillespie added an RBI single, and another run scored on a throwing error to push the advantage to 9-4.
 
New Haven made a late push in the ninth inning, hitting a three-run home run to cut the deficit to 9-7, but Samboy secured the final outs to seal the win.

Norfolk State continues its three-game series against New Haven on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Marty L. Miller Field.
