CARY, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team delivered a dominant performance in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Tennis Tournament, defeating No. 7 seed Coppin State 4-0 on Thursday morning at Cary Tennis Park.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 15-9 overall and advance to the semifinal round, where they will face the winner of No. 3 Howard and No. 6 South Carolina State. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Norfolk State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point, winning two of the three matches.
Coppin State took the first result at No. 1 doubles, where Brandy Babcock-Hanna and Saphirre Ferguson defeated Yuliya Yurkova and Julia Daroszewska 6-1.
The Spartans quickly responded, as Ines Sabadie and Angelina Maniawska evened the score with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Abigail Perue and Kyla Proctor.
Regina Urbiola and Yana Klimchuk clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 over Alison Azarak and Sirena Singh.
In singles play, Norfolk State continued to control the match, winning three straight contests to secure the 4-0 decision.
Urbiola extended the lead to 2-0 with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Perue. Sabina Iurea followed with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles against Azarak to make it 3-0.
Daroszewska clinched the match for the Spartans at the top flight, defeating Singh 6-2, 6-2.
At the time of the clinch, Klimchuk led 6-2, 5-2 at No. 4 singles, while Elena Martinez-Prado held a 6-1, 4-4 advantage at No. 5. Yurkova was trailing 6-3, 2-2 at No. 2 singles.
