NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over George Washington on Monday afternoon at the Nat Warren Tennis Center.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 13-9 overall, while the Revolutionaries fall to 7-8. The victory marks Norfolk State's first-ever win over George Washington after falling 6-1 in the previous meeting during the 2015-16 season.
Norfolk State set the tone early, sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the opening point. The duo of Yana Klimchuk and Regina Urbiola got things started with a 6-3 win at No. 3, while Yuliya Yurkova and Julia Daroszewska followed with a 6-3 victory at the top spot. Ines Sabadie and Angelina Maniawska completed the sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
In singles play, the teams split six matches, but the Spartans held on for the win behind the early doubles point.
Yana Klimchuk extended the lead to 2-0 with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 before George Washington responded with a win at No. 2 to make it 2-1.
Norfolk State regained control with back-to-back singles victories to clinch the match. Yuliya Yurkova earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1, while Regina Urbiola secured the decisive point with a three-set victory at No. 3, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
George Washington claimed the final two matches, but Norfolk State's early advantage proved to be the difference in the 4-3 decision.
