NORFOLK, Va. — Fresh off an individual title and a MEAC weekly honor in his collegiate debut, Norfolk State freshman Clinton Kipruto leads the Spartan men into the Virginia Invitational on Friday morning, hosted by the University of Virginia at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.
The men's 6K goes off at 8:45 a.m. It is Norfolk State's second meet of the season and its first look at Panorama Farms, a course the Spartans will see again Oct. 16 at the Panorama Farms Invitational and that hosted the 2023 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.

THE FIELD
Six teams line up Friday morning, and the competition is steep. Host Virginia is a program head coach Kenneth Giles has consistently ranked among the top two in the Southeast Region, and the Cavaliers enter the fall off an ACC championship and a fourth straight NCAA Championships appearance. North Carolina adds more ACC firepower.
The morning also brings the season's first MEAC measuring stick, with Howard the lone other conference program in the field.
And the Spartans get an immediate rematch with William & Mary. The Tribe won the team title at the Spider Alumni Open with 33 points to Norfolk State's 65, and W&M's Hayes Trapp was the runner-up Kipruto held off by 13.5 seconds.
LAST TIME OUT
Norfolk State opened the season Sept. 5 at the Spider Alumni Open, hosted by Richmond at Pole Green Park, finishing third out of 14 teams with 65 points.
Kipruto led wire to wire for the individual title in his collegiate debut, winning the 6K in 18:05.5 — a 4:51.0 mile average. He posted the fastest opening kilometer in the field at 2:53.4, came through 5K in 15:03.5 and never surrendered the lead at any checkpoint. The Spartans placed four runners in the top 20 and finished behind only William & Mary (33) and Georgetown (34), while ranking as the top HBCU program in the field.
Junior Lewis Too was 10th in 18:44.3, sophomore Daniel Mathenge 14th in 18:55.5 and junior Ian Kimutai 18th in 19:00.0. Junior Mohammed Mrahi closed the scoring in 26th at 19:22.6, giving Norfolk State an 18:50 team average and a 1:17.1 one-through-five spread. Sophomore Jemmel Green (19:45.0) and junior Mathew Kipkoech (19:48.3) took 32nd and 34th.
Kipruto was named MEAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week on Wednesday for the performance.
UP NEXT
The Spartans travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Paul Short Invitational on Friday, Oct. 2, hosted by Lehigh — a meet Giles has pointed to as an early measuring stick ahead of the MEAC Championships, set for Oct. 30 in Cary, N.C.
