2013 (Junior): An All-MEAC second team selection in his first year as a Spartan … was first among the team’s regulars and 13th in the MEAC with a .320 batting average … paced the Spartans with 35 RBI … tied with Cameron Day for the team-lead with two homers and 11 doubles … also had a .404 on-base percentage after drawing a team-best 24 walks … played in all 48 games and started 47 … served as the team’s DH early in the year, then was the primary first baseman after an illness kept Ross Cardwell out of the lineup … had 16 multi-hit games , including seven with three or more … also had a team-best 12 games with more than one RBI … batted 3-for-4 with a double in the second game of the year with Navy … recorded a pair of three-hit games in the SSU tournament against Fairleigh Dickinson and SSU … was 3-for-6 with two RBI in the win over FDU … had a double and went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the second matchup with SSU … had a season-best four RBI in a 3-for-5 day to cap the first series with Delaware State … posted a season-best four hits, finishing 4-for-6 with two RBI in the finale of the first UMES series … hit a home run in both games of the doubleheader sweep of DSU in early April … hit a two-run shot in the first game and a solo blast in the second … had five RBI combined in the doubleheader to help him earn MEAC Co-Player of the Week accolades … was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the second loss to William & Mary … tallied a 6-for-10 series with one double, two runs and two RBI in the second series with DSU, recording two hits in each of the three games … had a two-run double in the Spartans’ MEAC Tournament win over N.C. At PSC (Freshman/Sophomore): Batted .367 with four home runs and 37 RBI as a sophomore at Potomac State … as a freshman, batted .341 with 45 RBI to help Potomac State reach the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. … Markel also made the All-World Series team after batting .500 during the series.

High School: A three-sport athlete in high school … played three years of baseball, two of basketball and one in football … was a first-team All-Sentinel and All Tri-Valley League pick in both baseball and basketball as a senior … was second-team all-league in football … was also a second-team all-league basketball player as a junior, when he led the league in rebounding … batted .400 or better of his first two years, earning all-sentinel honors in both seasons.
