Biography

2016 (Sophomore Year): Competed in 26 games in the circle, making 20 starts … Threw nine complete games with two shutouts … Posted an 8-12 overall record with a 6.19 ERA … Ranked eighth in the MEAC in wins … Pitched a team-high 113.0 innings and struck out 63 … Finished the year 14th in NSU career records in appearances (52) … Pitched a five-inning shutout and allowed just two hits in an 8-0 win over Rhode Island on March 12 … Also allowed just two hits with four strikeouts in a five-inning shutout over Coppin State on March 19 … Pitched two scoreless innings of relief in victories over Rhode Island on March 5 and then again on March 11 … Got the win in a game 1 start against Rhode Island on March 5, giving up three earned runs and six hits in seven innings … Threw six innings in relief and earned the victory over Sacred Heart on March 12 after giving up three runs, two earned, with three strikeouts … Struck out a season-high six batters on March 9 in a game 1 loss against Radford … Also went hitless in nine at bats on the year.
 
2015 (Freshman Year): Named to the AD’s Honor Roll for the fall semester … The team’s co-Freshman of the Year … Appeared in 26 games in the circle and made 21 starts … Had eight of the team’s 14 wins on the year … Held a record of 8-14 with a 4.50 ERA in 109.0 innings of work … Struck out 41 and also threw nine complete games … Ranked eighth in the MEAC in wins … Also had two hits in seven at bats with one walk and one RBI … Gave up one unearned run and allowed three hits in a seven-inning, complete game win at Hampton on May 2 … Pitched a combined 12 innings in wins over UMES on April 3 and 4 and gave up just two earned runs … The following weekend, allowed five earned runs in 12 innings of work in two victories at Morgan State on April 11 and 12 … Struck out a career-high five in the first game and three in the second … Also won twice on March 28 and 29 versus Howard, allowing nine hits in 10.2 innings with three earned runs, five strikeouts and no walks … Suffered the loss in a 1-0 defeat at North Carolina Central on March 10 despite allowing seven hits and just one unearned run with three strikeouts in six innings … Earned her first career victory on March 14 after pitching 3.2 innings in relief against Drexel.
 
High School: Competed on the softball team all four years at Tabernacle Baptist under coach Susan Marrero … Pitched 30 innings and went 5-0 without giving up an earned run her junior year in 2013 … Struck out 66, walked just five and pitched two no-hitters … Batted .520 that season with an .833 on-base percentage and a .941 slugging percentage … Finished with the highest batting average on the team her last three years … Struck out 18 in one game in 2010, 16 in one game in 2012 and ‘14 and 17 in a single contest in 2013 … Threw no-hitters in 2013 against Suffolk Christian and Williamsburg Christian … Was the softball and volleyball team MVP all four years … Also named MVP of the basketball team her junior and senior seasons and the Defensive MVP her freshman year … Won the Christian Sportsmanship Award her senior year.
 
Club: Competed on the U-16 Hampton Roads Vipers AAU team for two and a half years, winning three different tournaments during that time … Also competed on the U-18 Orion Hunter team for one year, winning one tournament during that time as well … A member of the Azalea LL Senior All Stars in the summer of 2013.
 
Personal: Full name is Marissa Saturnina Marrero … Born on July 25, 1996 … Daughter of Susan and Juan Marrero … Has three older sisters, Christina, Jennifer and Megan, and one older brother, Jose … Sister Jennifer played softball at Hampton for two years … Also has a cousin who played soccer at Ferrum … Majoring in psychology … Wants to become a child psychologist … Member of the NSU Honors College … Enjoys playing a variety of sports.
