Biography

2010: Played in 26 games and started 18…split his time between second base and designated hitter…had five doubles, scored seven runs, knocked in seven and homered once during the season…had his first multi-hit game of the year at N.C. A&T (3-28-10), going 2-for-4 with two RBI…also went 2-for-4 at Georgetown (4-7-10)…drove in two runs with a double vs. UMES (4-10-10)…went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored at ODU (4-13-10)…hit a solo home run in the second game at Bethune-Cookman (4-17-10)…scored the game-winning run as a pinch runner in NSU’s first MEAC Tournament victory over Delaware State (5-20-10)…named to the NSU and MEAC Commissioner’s all-academic teams.

2009: Selected as the team’s Most Improved Player…Herrera started in 22 games and made an appearance in 29…served as one of NSU’s primary designated hitters while also playing one game at second base…ranked third among the Spartans with a .333 batting average…scored 23 times while registering 26 hits and 21 RBI…hit three home runs and two doubles…was a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts…Herrera had five RBI in the season opener against N.C. Central (2-21-09)…became the first Spartan in school history to hit two grand slams in one game when he accomplished the feat at Coppin State (3-31-09)…did not start that game against CSU, but went 2-for-4 with grand slams in the sixth and seventh innings…finished the doubleheader with CSU by going 5-for-8 with nine RBI…Herrera had another strong performance in a doubleheader against N.C. Central (4-15-09) where he was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored…named to the MEAC All-Tournament team in Daytona Beach, Fla…batted .462 (6-for-13) with at least one hit in each of the Spartans’ four tournament games…was 3-for-4 with the game-tying RBI double in the elimination game win over Delaware State (5-15-09).

2008: Played in 11 games and started four times…had an RBI single in his first career at-bat, against North Carolina Central (3-10-08)…also scored a run in that game…was 2-for-3 with his first career double at Longwood (4-23-08).

High School: Batted .406 and led his team from the Chichi Vasquez League in hits in the spring of 2007 at the City Tournament in Santiago…was named Junior Division Rookie of the Year in 2003 and Junior Division MVP in 2004.

Personal: Juan Alejandro Herrera was born on Dec. 16, 1988…son of Juan Herrera and Sandra Perdomo…majoring in building construction technology.
