2019-20: NSU AD Honor Roll member for the spring semester.
Indoor: Competed in a pair of regular-season meets in addition to the MEAC Indoor Championships … Placed third with 4,224 points in the heptathlon at the VMI Winter Relays … Competed in the 60m hurdles and DMR at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational … Scored 4,330 points en route to a bronze-medal finish at the MEAC Indoor Championships … Was also ninth in the triple jump and 10th n the 60m hurdles at the conference meet.
Outdoor: Season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
2018-19: Named the NSU men’s track MVP for 2018-19.
Indoor: Posted a PR of 8.24 seconds in the 60m hurdles at Virginia Tech, and went on to finish eighth in that event … A staple on NSU’s 4x400 relay, Banks helped that team win at VMI and take third at Virginia Tech … Placed third in the heptathlon at the CNU Captains Invitational, with 4,272 points … Was sixth in the 60 hurdles (8.34) and third in the long jump (21-0) at the Liberty Invitational … Registered a new personal best with 4,490 points in the heptathlon at the MEAC Indoor Championships, finishing as conference runner-up … Also took seventh in the 60m hurdles (8.37) and sixth in the triple jump (45-0.25) at the MEAC indoor meet.
Outdoor: Opened outdoor season with a fifth-place showing in the 400m hurdles at the Florida Relays (51.47) … Finished fourth (14.45) and then third (14.36) in the 110m hurdles in back-to-back meets at Charlotte and U.Va., respectively … Won the MEAC outdoor gold medal in the 400m hurdles in a PR of 50.43 seconds … Took the bronze with a third-place showing in the 110 hurdles in 14.03 seconds, also a PR … Also helped the 4x400 relay place fourth at the MEAC Outdoor Championships … Advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary Round for the third straight year … Advanced past the first round and posted a time of 50.70 in the second round … Was 15th at regionals, just three spots out of a bid to the outdoor nationals.
2017-18: Indoor: Sprinter and relay team member during indoor season … Took fifth in the 500 meters at the season-opening Jack Pyrah Invitational at Villanova … Helped the 4x400 relay team place second at Penn State, while also finishing eighth in the open 400 meters (49.00) … Placed in the top five in both the 400 (49.56, fifth) and 500 meters (1:05.64, fourth) at the VMI Winter Relays … Ran legs on the fourth-place 4x400 relay team and fifth-place medley relay unit at the MEAC Indoor Championships.
Outdoor: Helped Spartan relay teams earn three first-place finishes in the first three meets of outdoor season … Ran on the winning 4x300 relay at the Weems Baskin Invitational, the winning 4x400 team at the Fred Hardy Invitational, and the victorious 4x200 relay at the Colonial Relays … Won the 400 meters at the VSU Trojan Invitational (48.40) and was seventh at the U.Va. Grand Prix (48.07) … Placed second in the 400 hurdles at the MEAC Outdoor Championships in 51.51 seconds, earning him a bid to the NCAA East Preliminary Round for the second straight year … At the NCAA East meet, Banks ran a 51.16 to place sixth in the prelims … Went on to clock a 51.23 in the semifinals, placing 16th at the regional – four spots shy of qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Nationals.
2016-17: Indoor: In his first collegiate meet, took second in the 400 meters (50.82) and ran on the first-place 4x400 relay team at the CNU Holiday Open … Again finished as runner-up in the 400 at the Art & Linda Maillet UNC Open with a time of 49.65 … Lowered his season-best time to 49.56 in a ninth-place showing at the Liberty Kickoff … Won the 400 in 50.10 at the CNU Vince Brown Invitational … Qualified for the MEAC Indoor Championships in the 400 and triple jump … Ran a leg on the sixth-place 4x400 relay team at the conference meet.
Outdoor: An NCAA regional qualifier in his first outdoor season with the Spartans … Eclipsed his previous personal bests in both the 400 and 400m hurdles at the Fred Hardy Invitational hosted by Richmond … Won the 400 hurdles in 53.43 seconds and was runner-up in the 400m (47.92) … Also ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team at that meet … Ran a leg on the winning sprint medley relay at the Colonial Relays … Placed third in the 400 hurdles at Charlotte (52.97) and was fifth at the Morgan State Legacy Meet (54.29) … Came in third in the 400 meters at the U.Va. Grand Prix (47.91) … Set a new PR in the 400 hurdles at the MEAC Outdoor Championships, clocking a time of 51.85 in a runner-up finish … Also ran on the Spartans’ sixth-place 4x400 relay team … Advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary Round in that event … Advanced out of the first round with his time of 52.51 in the quarterfinals … PRed again in the semifinals, posting a time of 51.30 for a 15th-place finish in the regional.
2015-16: Attended NSU but redshirted the season.
High School: Played four years of football and lettered two years in track and field … Was indoor 5A state champion and 5A South regional champ in the 300 meters as a senior, with a PR of 35.20 seconds … Won the state 5A title during outdoor season in the 400 meters … Ran a high school PR of 48.1 in the 400 … Finished as the state runner-up in the 300m hurdles as a senior as well … Qualified for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in the 400m hurdles, placing 12th as a senior … During his junior year, was conference and regional runner-up before placing fourth at the state outdoor meet in the 300 hurdles … Ran on Hermitage’s national championship sprint medley relay team at the 2014 New Balance Outdoor Nationals.
Personal: Jaylen Stephawn Banks was born on April 26, 1997 … Son of Stephawn and Linda Banks … Majoring in psychology … His uncle, Donnie, ran track and played football at NSU.
