Donor Spotlight - Al Steward '82, MA '93
1. What is your relation to Norfolk State – alumnus, fan, staff member, parent?
I attended Norfolk State after serving the U.S. Air Force, graduating in 1982 and completing a master’s degree in Applied Sociology in 1993.
2. How would you describe Norfolk State University?
Norfolk State University has always been home to me. I walked across today’s campus when it was a golf course on my way to Liberty Park Elementary School. My mother went to school here. I had scholarships to go away to college, but I always intended to go to Norfolk State.
3. Can you share a little of your background? How long have you been an NSUAF member?
I taught for St. Leo on the Naval Base for more than 25 years. At one point, some NSU student-athletes took my courses. Those relationships led to my interest in supporting student-athletes through the NSUAF.
4. What is your favorite NSU Athletics memory or experience?
My favorite experience has been spearheading the 50/50 raffle conducted by the Norfolk Alumni Chapter, raising money for athletics and the university. It was meaningful when we were recognized as a member of the Million Dollar Club. Plus, we developed the reputation to the point that we were able to do the raffle at the MEAC Tournament.
5. Why do you support Norfolk State and its student-athletes?
For so many of us, if it were not for the support we received, we could not have gone to school. The education is most important. For me, it was predestined because of my mother and other aunts and cousins that were teachers. I want to help others.
6. What would you say to someone that is considering becoming a member of NSUAF?
I recommend joining the NSUAF if you understand the mission of the foundation and are willing to promote our cause – generating funds for student-athletes. I have been involved so long that I’m often representing Norfolk State when I go out in social circles, answering questions about the athletics program or the MEAC Tournament in our community. We need to promote that we are here to raise money for student-athletes.
