Assistant Coach Brad Stephenson

Brad Stephenson

  • Title
    Assistant Coach

Brad Stephenson enters his first year as assistant coach for the Spartans and will primarily be working with the catchers. A native of Chesapeake, VA, Stephenson graduated from Great Bridge High School where he played for former Spartans coach Wiley Lee.

Recruited as a catcher, Stephenson played one season each at East Carolina University and Virginia Commonwealth University before finishing his career at Norfolk State University. He hit .364 with 14 doubles, 3 triples, 2 homeruns, 33 RBI's, 27 walks, 14 strikeouts and an OPS of 1.002. This effort combined with stellar defense earned him a spot on the Division 1 All-State team in Virginia, first team all-conference and first team all-tournament.

He then participated in a pre-draft workout on the Washington Nationals field and subsequently, after going undrafted, became the first Spartan to represent NSU in the Cape Cod League. He batted .293 and pitched 3 scoreless innings between the Bourne Braves and YD Red Sox.

Following his college career, Stephenson landed a job working directly for 4-time MLB All-Star and former American League strikeout king Scott Kazmir on the Tampa Bay Rays. During this time, Kazmir's ERA improved enough that when the Los Angeles Angels traded for him before the playoffs, Kazmir took Stephenson with him.

Since finishing his baseball career, Stephenson and his brothers have built a successful printing business. He resides in Chesapeake with his wife Kate, and daughter Stella.
