Brett Mays enters his first year as the pitching coach for the Norfolk State University baseball program.
 
Prior to coming to Norfolk State, May served two seasons as the pitching coach at Division III Randolph-Macon College, in Ashland, Va.
 
In 2022, the program went 26-12 and was ranked as high as 24th nationally. In 2023, RMC went 32-15 overall, were ranked as high as sixth nationally, and received an at-large postseason bid to the NCAA Regionals versus host and No. 1 nationally ranked Johns Hopkins University. Also in 2023, Hayden Snelsire, a right-handed pitcher, was named a Second-Team ABCA/Rawlings All-American and drafted in the MLB Draft in the 17th Round, Pick 513, to the Tampa Bay Rays.
 
Prior to Randolph-Macon, Mays coached locally at NJCAA DII Bryant & Stratton College for two seasons (2020-2021), under the tutelage of 13-year MLB Veteran and two-time All-Star Pitcher, Gary Lavelle. The 2020 season was shortened to seven games due to COVID shutdowns. In 2021, the program had 10 pitchers commit and sign to play and attend four-year colleges and universities across the country, the most in program history.
 
Mays has also coached the past three summers for the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plain League. As the pitching coach, he has seen three of his Pilots pitchers drafted in the MLB Draft, including Alden Mathes 19th Round Baltimore (2021), Jake Miller 8th Round Detroit (2022), and Mason Miller 14th Round Kansas City (2022).
 
From 2018-2019, Mays helped start the baseball program at Stratford University in Newport News, Va. He served as the pitching coach & recruiting coordinator. In 2019, Stratford was ranked as high as seventh nationally in the USCAA, and Jordan Carter received Player of the Year honors for being the best player in the country.
 
Mays began his coaching career in 2015 as an instructor with Travel Baseball Organization, Old Dominion Hitters, mainly working with pitchers. He then served as the pitching coach for Bethel High School in Hampton, Va. during 2017.
 
Mays is local to Hampton Roads.
 
After graduating from Woodside High School in Newport News, Va. in 2011, Mays played one year at Marshall University before returning home. He graduated from Christopher Newport University in 2015 with a B.A. in History, where he was a member of the baseball team for three seasons. He and his wife, Kala, currently reside in Newport News.
