Quentin Jones is in his third season as an assistant with the NSU baseball program. He coaches the pitching staff.
With Jones’ assistance, the NSU pitching staff recorded a 3.93 ERA in 2007, good for second in the MEAC and 39th in Division I. NSU followed that up with a 4.07 mark in 2008, which ranked 22nd nationally. The NSU pitching staff led the conference with 16 complete games last season. Jones helped tutor school strikeout king Joey Seal, who last season became the only MEAC and HBCU player to be named to the initial Roger Clemens Award watch list for the national pitcher of the year award.
Prior to returning to his alma mater, Jones worked as a scout for Perfect Game USA in the spring of 2006. He was also the pitching coach for the Mid-Missouri Mavericks independent baseball team in 2005.
Jones had a standout career at NSU from 1998-2000, serving as a utility player and pitcher for the Spartans. He saw action at shortstop, third base and outfield and also served as a relief specialist during his NSU career. Jones’ best year came as a junior in 2000, when he hit five home runs and drove in 55, the fifth-most RBI in a single-season in school history. A second-team All-MEAC selection in 2000, Jones led the team with 22 pitching appearances that season and earned six saves over his career.
Jones was a 30th round draft choice of the Atlanta Braves in 2000. He played parts of five seasons in the professional ranks split between Class A teams in the Braves organization and independent teams.
A native of Danville, Va., Jones received his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from NSU in May 2007. He is also taking graduate courses in administration and supervision.
