Biography

2017 (Senior): Played in 40 of the team’s 48 games and started 21 times … Hit .193 (16-of-83) with one double, one triple, five RBI and 14 runs scored … Stole six bases in eight attempts … Went 5-for-12 in the season-opening three-game series with Villanova, including two two-hit games … Was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases in the first game with Villanova … Was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the middle game and followed that up by going 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs and two RBI in the last game of the series … Also drove in two runs in the middle game of the Tennessee series … Batted 2-for-5 with a run scored in the final game at Tennessee … Member of the NSU Athletics Director’s Honor Roll for the spring 2017 semester.

2016 (Junior): Played in 39 games and started 38 times … Missed 10 games early in the season due to injury … Named to the All-MEAC second team … Batted .290 on the season with team-highs of 25 stolen bases and 41 runs scored out of the lead-off spot in the lineup … Drove in 16 runs and added eight doubles and one triple … Had an on-base percentage of .416 … Was only caught stealing once on the season (25-for-26) … Ranked second in the MEAC in total stolen bases and first in steals per game (0.64) … Was tied for eighth in the nation among D-I players in steals per game and 36th in total steals … Ranked second in the MEAC and 28th in the nation in runs per game (1.05) … In MEAC-only games, Dukes ranked third in the conference in runs (28), first in steals (17) and batted .326 … Had 11 multi-hit games … Tied his career high with four hits in a 4-for-4 day at MDES in mid-April … Recorded three runs scored and two doubles in that game, which was the first of a doubleheader … That game was part of a 7-for-13 four-game stretch for Dukes against MDES and VSU, which earned him MEAC Player of the Week honors … Was 3-for-4 with a season-high four runs scored at Coppin State earlier in the month … Went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a two-run double in the win over William & Mary … Hit an RBI single in the MEAC tournament win over Florida A&M … Had four games where he stole two bases … Named to the MEAC All-Academic Team … Played the last part of the collegiate summer ball circuit with the Valley Baseball League’s Purcellville Cannons in western Virginia … Batted .273 with nine runs scored in 11 games played.
 
2015 (Sophomore): An All-MEAC first-team outfielder in his first season as a starter … Also named to the VaSID all-state second team … Led the MEAC with a .357 batting average … Scored 33 runs in 33 games played, tying for first in the MEAC and ranking 42nd nationally in runs per game (1.00) … Hit eight doubles, two triples, stole 11 bases and drove in 18 runs … Also ranked fifth in the MEAC in on-base percentage (.437) and eighth in stolen bases … Had his first career multi-hit game with a 2-for-5 performance against IPFW in early March … That was the first of nine multi-hit games by Dukes on the year … Went 3-for-4 with a career-high four runs scored and a pair of doubles in the second game of a doubleheader at Delaware State later in March … Batted 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI and one double in the 21-0 win over DSU at home in early April … Posted a 6-for-11 series with five runs scored in NSU’s sweep of MDES in mid-April … Those three games were the last of his season-long 11-game hitting streak and helped him win his first-ever MEAC Player of the Week award … Went 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs, one double and one triple to open a three-game series with Coppin State in early May … went 5-for-9 in that series … Missed the Jackson State series to close the regular season and the MEAC tournament due to a health condition … Named to the MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Team … Also earned a spot on the NSU AD’s Honor Roll for the fall semester.
 
2014 (Freshman): Played in 16 games with three starts as a freshman … Had one hit, two RBI and four runs scored on the year … Went 1-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk in his first career start, against Villanova … Had his first career stolen base in the fourth game of the Savannah State series … Scored a run as a substitute against MDES in early May, and again versus N.C. Central in the MEAC Tournament.
 
High School: A first-team all-district and all-region outfielder for Osbourn Park … Also earned honorable mention all-state accolades after batting .338 with 24 stolen bases in 22 games … Was rated among the top 1,000 senior high school prospects in the nation by the recruiting service Perfect Game … Also started at quarterback for OPHS, passing for approximately 2,000 yards and 20 TDs as a senior … Earned nine varsity letters: four in both baseball and football, and one in basketball.
 
Personal: Denathan Jamaal Dukes was born on Feb. 20, 1995 … Son of Dwight and Gwendolyn Dukes … Majored in computer science.
