Biography

2018 (Senior): Played in 35 games and started 33 times … Offensively, batted .184 with two homers and 14 runs batted in … Had three games with two hits … Belted the first two homers in his career in the MEAC Tournament … Hit a solo homer in NSU’s win over Bethune-Cookman in the opening round … Added a solo shot in the team’s first game with N.C. A&T … Defensively, Herrera posted a fielding percentage of .984, committing just four errors in 292 chances … Threw out 40 percent of attempted base stealers, cutting down 29 runners in all … Named to the MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Team and was an NSU Athletics Director’s Honor Roll member for both semesters.

2017 (Junior): Played in 42 games with 39 starts as the Spartans’ primary catcher … Batted .254 with five doubles, 16 RBI and 11 runs scored … Committed only four errors behind the plate, recording a fielding percentage of .988 … Also threw out 16 attempted base stealers and picked off two runners … Finished the year with five stolen bases, the most of his career in any season … Had seven games with at least two hits, including two with three … Hit 3-for-4, matching his career high, with a double and two RBI in the second win over Villanova … Also batted 2-for-5 in the Villanova series finale, finishing 6-for-12 in that series … Was 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the series opener at Tennessee … Again matched his season and career high with three hits in the win at North Carolina A&T, going 3-for-4 with two RBI … Also drove in two runs in a 2-for-4 day in the final series with Coppin State … Scored two runs in the win at Longwood … Named to the NSU AD Honor Roll for both semesters and earned a spot on the MEAC All-Academic Team.

2016 (Sophomore): Played in 37 games and started 28 times (27 at catcher) for the Spartans … Committed just three errors all season, posting a .988 fielding percentage … Threw out 11 would-be base-stealers … At the plate, batted .226 with 19 hits in 84 at-bats … Doubled twice and scored 11 runs … Reached base at a .371 clip … Hit two doubles and went 2-for-4 with an RBI in an early-season loss to Lehigh … Went 2-for-5 with two runs scored in the first win over Towson … Also had two hits in two at-bats against William & Mary in mid-March … Went 2-for-2 with an RBI in a win at MDES in the first series with the Hawks … Batted 1-for-3 with two runs scored in a win over Coppin State in the teams’ first series … Knocked in two runs in the MEAC tournament elimination win over Coppin State … Played for the Coastal Plain League’s Martinsville Mustangs during the summer.
 
2015 (Freshman): Made an immediate impact behind the plate and with the bat in his first season at NSU … Started 32 of the 34 games in which he played … Batted .290 for the season, fifth-best on the team … Knocked in 15 runs, scored 16 times and only struck out 12 times in 93 at-bats … Only committed three errors all season, posting a .986 fielding percentage … Had six multi-hit games, including a 2-for-4 effort in his collegiate debut against N.C. Central … Posted six hits in the four-game IPFW series, including career highs in hits (three) and RBI (three) in the third game … Went 2-for-3 with two RBI and reached base four times in a win over MDES in March … Had a 2-for-5 effort with two runs and an RBI against Coppin State a week later … Matched his season and career high with three RBI and hit his only double of the year in a win at CSU in April … Went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in that game … Finished that series at CSU 4-for-10 … Also knocked in two runs in the middle game of the final CSU series … Named to the NSU AD’s Honor Roll for both semesters.
 
High School: Earned three varsity letters in baseball and also played varsity football as a freshman … Was a two-year starter in baseball at St. Joseph … As a senior, he was a first-team All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference performer after batting .383 with six doubles and 18 RBI … Also threw out 41 percent of would-be base stealers that year, when he served as team captain … A second-team All-FCIAC East Division pick as a junior, when he batted .390 to help St. Joseph win the state championship.
