Biography

2014 (Junior): Pitched in 19 games and started six times for NSU … went 3-5 and struck out 33 over 38.2 innings of work … earned the win over Quinnipiac by striking out the final hitter in the top of the 10th inning before NSU rallied to win it in the bottom of the frame … worked mostly out of the bullpen, logging scoreless appearances against Duke (0.2 IP), Savannah State (1.1 IP), UMES twice and at William & Mary … started three times in his final four appearances of the year … picked up his second win of the year by limiting UMES to two hits and one run while fanning five hitters in the early May series … had his best outing of the year in the MEAC Tournament win over Florida A&M … helped eliminate the Rattlers by fanning a season-high 12, most by an NSU pitcher during the year, over 7.2 innings of work … gave up just five hits and one run … named to the NSU Athletics Director’s Honor Roll for both the fall and spring semesters.

At COA: Played two years at COA, the same school which produced current Spartan Ross Cardwell … Vales went 6-8 with a 3.16 ERA as a sophomore … yielded just 60 hits and fanned 68 batters in 74 innings pitched … pitched six complete games … also hit .257 with two homers and 20 RBI at the plate.

High School: Three-year letterwinner in baseball … also ran two years of cross country and one of indoor track … was an all-conference and North Carolina 3A all-state pick as a senior for Currituck County … batted .411 and went 7-2 with a 1.35 ERA in helping CCHS win the Northeastern Coastal Conference championship … was also an all-conference selection as a junior … team MVP his last two seasons.

Personal: Joshua M. Vales was born on Feb. 5, 1993 … goes by Josh … son of Ernie and Evelyn Vales … majoring in nutrition.
