Harry Freeman enters his second season and his fourth stint overall with the Norfolk State track and field program in 2025-26, serving as the special assistant to Director of Track & Field Programs Kenneth Giles. He specializes in coaching the 400 meters, 400-meter hurdles, and the 4x400-meter relay.

During the 2024-25 season, Freeman played a pivotal role in the Spartans' success. He coached Kendrick Winfield to All-American honors and led the 4x400-meter relay team to post the nation’s top time at the South Florida Invitational. He also helped guide Premier Wynn to qualify for the U20 Championships in the summer of 2024.

Freeman contributed to Norfolk State’s championship sweep on the men’s side, winning both the MEAC indoor and outdoor titles, while the women’s team finished as runner-up in both seasons. He coached four individuals and one relay team that qualified for the NCAA Outdoor East Regionals, and helped set two school relay records and one individual school record.

Freeman returned to NSU for his fourth stint at the University. Freeman was an assistant coach from 2006-2011 working first with the men’s program (2006-08) and then with the women’s (2008-09), before assisting with both from 2009-11. Freeman had a hand in the NSU men and women capturing 14 MEAC Titles during that period.
 
Freeman spent time as an assistant coach for St. Augustine College men’s and women’s cross country and track programs from 1990-96 and 1998-05. His primary responsibility was to coach the cross-country team, and he also assisted with the track team’s middle-distance runners and quarter-milers. Freeman guided the Falcons to the 2000 Division II Southeast region Cross Country title and was named regional Coach of the Year that season.
 
Freeman also helped the Falcons to 16 NCAA Division II indoor and outdoor track championships during his tenure.
 
Freeman was also a standout runner for the Falcons from 1979-83. He was the three-time CIAA Cross Country Most Outstanding Performer and was the 1982 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Champion. That same year, Freeman became the first Division II cross country All-American in CIAA history. He still holds the school’s cross-country records for the 8,000 and 10,000 meters.
 
Freeman has nearly two decades of experience in directing summer youth programs in the Raleigh, N.C. area and in the Hampton Roads region. He also has a decade of classroom teaching experience as a physical education teacher.
 
Freeman earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from St. Augustine’s in 1983. His son, also named Harry was a member of the NSU Football Team from 2013-2016.
