Former NSU standout sprinter Kenneth Smith is in his fifth season working with the NSU track and field programs. After serving as a graduate assistant for three seasons, Smith is in his second season as an assistant coach. He works with the sprinters and hurdlers.

Smith obtained his Level 1 coach certification in December of 2018 and his CPR/AED certification in May of 2018.

A Newport News native, Smith was a four-year letterman for the Spartans from 2009-13. He was a member of NSU’s record-setting run of success in the MEAC, as the Spartans won a total of seven MEAC titles (four indoor, three outdoor) during his time in the green and gold. He ran on five gold medal-winning relay teams at NSU, including two conference championships in the 4x400 relay, two in the distance medley relay and one in the 4x100 relay.

Individually, Smith competed in the sprints and hurdles. He won a bronze medal in the 100 meters at the MEAC Outdoor Championships as a senior.

Smith graduated from NSU in 2013 a bachelor’s degree in mass communications. He earned his master’s from NSU in 2015 in public relations.

Smith was a three-sport athlete at Woodside High School in Newport News, where he competed in football, soccer and track. He was a Daily Press All-Star as a sprinter and relay member for Woodside.
