Shannon Buffington joined the Spartan softball program as an assistant coach for the 2021 season. A former pitcher with NSU, she will assist in everyday aspects of the program in addition to her on-the-field coaching duties.
A native of Virginia Beach, she competed for the Spartans for two seasons in 2018 and ’19 after arriving from Richard Bland College. Buffington went 3-2 with a 3.06 ERA in her senior year in 2019, helping the Spartans capture the MEAC Northern Division crown at 11-4. It marked the program’s first-ever regular season title in the league.
She also led NSU to a 25-20 overall record, its first winning record in six years. Buffington ranked fifth in the MEAC in ERA that year and 32nd in the nation in fewest walks per nine innings (1.25). She earned the team’s Coaches Award as a junior in 2018 as NSU finished 10-8 in the league.
Following her senior year, Buffington was drafted in the 9th round of the American Softball Association (ASBA) 2019 draft by Moh-BEEL! USA. She also assisted the NSU program in a volunteer capacity during the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season while finishing her degree.
Buffington graduated with her bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State in May of 2020.
