2021 (Graduate Year): Named to the Preseason All-MEAC first team … Member of the AD’s Honor Roll both semesters … Played in just five games, including four starts in left field, before missing the rest of the season due to injury … Had 5 hits in 14 at bats (.357) with three runs, an RBI, two walks and two stolen bases … Finished her career fourth all-time at NSU in outfield putouts (207), ninth in walks (62), 11th in hits (150) and hit by pitch (9), and 13th in outfield assists (11) … Batted 2-for-4 with a run scored in a game 1 win over Morehead State on Feb. 21 … Walked twice and stole two bases in game 2 on Feb. 20 … Her only non-start of the season came on April 3 in a pinch-hit appearance on Senior Day when she faced one pitch.
2020 (Redshirt Senior Year): Preseason MEAC Player of the Year … Member of the AD’s Honor Roll both semesters and the MEAC All-Academic Team … Competed in 20 games and made 19 starts on the season before it was shut down due to COVID-19 … Started all 19 games in left field … Hit .340 in 50 at bats with 11 runs, two doubles, three RBI, a team-leading 11 walks and eight stolen bases … Reached base in the last 19 games of the season … Ended the year 10th all-time at NSU in walks (60) and 13th in stolen base attempts (61) … Drove in all three runs on the season in a win over Robert Morris on Feb. 9, hitting 1-for-3 with a stolen base … Batted 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk in a win over Hartford on Feb. 22 … Scored twice in a game 2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 28 … The next day, batted 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk in a win over Morehead State on Feb. 29 … Stole a pair of bases, walked once and went 1-for-3 with a run scored later in the day against Marshall … Had two more stolen bases and a walk while batting 2-for-4 with a run scored on March 7 against Saint Peter’s … Hit a double and went 2-for-4 in a win at Maryland Eastern Shore on March 12.
2019 (Redshirt Junior Year): Earned a spot on the All-MEAC First Team, NSU’s first all-conference outfielder in five years … A Preseason First-Team All-MEAC honoree as well … Named to the VaSID (Virginia Sports Information Directors) All-State Second Team for the second year in a row … Member of the AD’s Honor Roll during both semesters and the MEAC All-Academic Team … Competed in all 45 games, starting every one in left field … Led the team with a .383 average, 42 runs, 59 hits and a .425 on-base percentage … Had eight doubles, two triples, one home run, 16 RBI, 74 total bases, 22 stolen bases and a .481 slugging percentage … Ranked second in the MEAC in runs, hits and at bats (154), and fifth in batting average and stolen bases … Stood No. 44 in the nation in runs per game (0.93), No. 46 in stolen bases per game (0.49) and No. 108 in batting average … Ranked sixth in NSU Division I records in runs, eighth in batting average and stolen bases, ninth in hits, 12th in hit by pitch (6) and 13th in total bases … Hit .377 (26-of-69) with runners on base and 15-of-43 (.349) with runners in scoring position … Led the team with 20 multi-hit games on the year … Started the year off with a 14-game hit streak, batting .481 during that time, and reached base in the first 17 games of the season … Had five straight games with at least two hits from March 24-April 3, batting 11-for-17 during that time … Started it off with a 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored in game 2 against Morgan State on March 24 … In a three-game sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore from March 30-31, hit 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, a triple and two stolen bases in game 1, 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI and another stolen base in game 2, and finally 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two more stolen bases in the third game of the series … Also hit 2-for-3 in game 1 at UMBC on April 3 … Batted 4-for-5 in a sweep of North Carolina A&T on March 15, including a 2-for-3 effort in game 1 with two runs, three RBI, three stolen bases, a walk and a double … Swiped two bases and hit 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in a win over Delaware on Feb. 8 … On Feb. 24, hit 3-for-3 against Mount St. Mary’s and 2-for-4 with a run scored against Central Connecticut State, hitting a two-bagger in both games … The next day, proceeded to hit her first career homer while going 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI in a win over Morehead State, followed by a 2-for-3 effort with two runs and two stolen bases in a victory over St. Bonaventure later in the day … Had two hits in games against Robert Morris and Delaware State on Feb. 15 … Also had games of 2-for-3 with two runs scored in a win over Buffalo (March 1), 2-for-4 with an RBI and run in a win over Delaware (March 2), and 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double in game 1 against North Carolina Central (March 5) … Late in the season, hit 3-for-4 in games against Delaware State on April 20 and North Carolina Central on May 9 … Also had a 2-for-4 performance in game 1 at Delaware State on April 19 with two runs scored and an RBI in the win.
2018 (Junior Year): Played in and started 33 games on the year … Named the MEAC Player of the Week on Feb. 26 … Voted to the VaSID All-State Second Team … Member of the MEAC All-Academic Team and the AD’s Honor Roll both semesters … Also garnered a spot on the Easton/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar Athlete team … Started 20 games in center field and 13 in left field … Batted .408 on the year, tops on the team … Had 42 hits in 103 at bats with 32 runs, four doubles, 11 RBI, 15 walks and 20 stolen bases … Also had a .483 on-base percentage and a .447 slugging percentage … Ranked ninth in the MEAC in runs and stolen bases, 12th in walks and 22nd in hits … Would have led the MEAC in on-base percentage and ranked second in the league and 45th in the nation in batting average but fell short of the games played requirement … Led the team in stolen bases and was second in runs scored … Finished with the sixth-highest batting average in NSU’s Division I history and also ranked ninth in stolen bases … Batted 20-for-36 (.556) with runners on base and 10-for-21 (.476) with runners in scoring position … Had 13 multi-hit games on the year … Also tied for the team’s longest hitting streak (7) and reached base streak (13) on the year … Batted .541 (20-for-37) through the first 13 games of the season … Had one of her best games of the year in a game 2 win at Howard on April 14, hitting 3-for-5 with a double, three runs and three RBI … Swiped four bases as part of a 3-for-3 game with two runs scored in a game 1 win at Maryland Eastern Shore on March 31 … The day before, hit 2-for-4 with two runs scored against the Hawks … Also had four stolen bases in game 2 against South Carolina State on Feb. 18, hitting 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI … Also batted 3-for-3 with three runs scored in game 1 as part of the doubleheader sweep … Became the sixth player in NSU’s Division I history to steal at least four bases in a game … Finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored in a win at Savannah State on Feb. 17 … Batted 6-for-8 with five runs, three RBI, three stolen bases, two doubles and two walks in a three-game sweep of S.C. State on Feb. 23-24 … A day later, hit 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored and two RBI in a game 2 win over Davis & Elkins on Feb. 25 … Hit 5-for-7 with two runs and an RBI in a doubleheader against Hampton on April 28 … Had a pair of hits and walked twice against Morgan State on April 8.
2017 (Sophomore Year): Member of the AD’s Honor Roll both semesters as well as the MEAC All-Academic Team … Played in 34 games and made 30 starts, all in left field … Hit .268 on the season in 71 at bats and led the team with 18 walks … Ranked second on the squad with a .416 on-base percentage … Also stood fifth in the MEAC in walks and 10th in on-base percentage … Ranked No. 132 in the nation in walks per game at 0.53 … Scored nine runs on 19 hits with three RBI and a pair of stolen bases … Hit 10-for-33 (.303) with runners on base and 5-for-18 (.278) with runners in scoring position … Started the year off slow but finished with a flurry, hitting 12-for-25 in the last 10 games of the season … Reached base in all 10 of those games … Ended the year on a six-game hitting streak, the longest on the team during the season … Batted 5-for-8 in the last three games of the season at Hampton on April 29-30 … In the last game of the year on April 30, drove in a pair of runs in the seventh to send the contest into extra innings while hitting 2-for-3 … Also hit 2-for-2 in game 2 of a doubleheader against the Pirates on April 29 … Walked twice and scored a pair of runs in game 2 against Howard on April 15 … The day before, had two hits in two at bats in a victory over the Bison … Finished the three-game series 3-for-5 with four runs and four walks … Also had a two-hit game in the first contest of a doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore on April 2, batting 2-for-3.
2016 (Freshman Year): Competed in and started the first 12 games of the season before missing the rest of the year due to injury … Member of the AD’s Honor Roll and the Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete team … Hit .276 in 29 at bats with seven runs, eight hits and 10 walks … Had a .462 on-base percentage … Had a pair of sacrifice bunts and also scored twice in a win over Rhode Island on March 11 … Walked twice in a game 1 victory over Rhode Island on March 5 and then again in a game 2 loss to the Rams on March 6 … Had hits in eight of the 11 games she had at least one at bat and reached base in all 12 games.
High School: Competed on the softball team all four years at Bayside … Named to the All-South Region first team at outfield as a senior in 2015 … Also earned second-team 6A All-State accolades from the Virginia High School League (VHSL) and the Virginia High School Coaches Association (VHSCA) … Garnered first-team All-Coastal Conference 1 honors as well … Led Bayside to the region quarterfinal in 2015 as well as a share of the conference championship … Batted .400 that year after hitting .316 as a junior in 2014 … Named the team’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year her senior year … Also competed on the track team all four years and the volleyball team her last three years … Member of the school’s Honor Roll.
Club: Competed with current NSU teammates Kylee Lopez and Seana Moriarty on the AAU 18U Legends Elite Gold team that advanced to the national championship tournament in 2013 … Led that squad to the ASA Region 3 Gold Qualifer championship to advance to nationals.
Personal: Full name is Shelby Marie DesChamps … Born on Sept. 21, 1997 … Last name is pronounced Duh-SHOMP … Daughter of Lori and John Robert DesChamps Jr. … Has one older brother, John, who played collegiate baseball at both Chowan and NSU’s MEAC rival UMES … Majoring in social work as a grad student … Graduated with a degree in social work in May of 2019 … Wants to become a social worker or work with kids … Member of the Phi Alpha Honor Society and the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society … Enjoys working out, shopping and playing volleyball.
