With a lifelong passion for the game and a strong commitment to serving others, Bart Hynes brings more than 30 years of experience as both a baseball player and coach to Norfolk State University's softball program, where he plays an integral role in the continued development of the Spartans. Working under head coach Matthews, he contributes to player development, practice planning, game preparation, recruiting, scouting, and the overall growth of student-athletes on and off the field.
Hynes retired as a Senior Chief from the United States Navy after 24 years of honorable service, and has continued to dedicate his time to mentoring and developing young athletes ever since. Throughout his career in baseball, he has had the opportunity to both play and coach the game, sharing his knowledge and passion along the way. Eight years ago, he transitioned into coaching softball, most recently with Unity Russell.
In his role at Norfolk State, Hynes works closely with student-athletes to develop fundamental skills, improve performance, and build confidence while emphasizing discipline, accountability, teamwork, and a strong competitive mindset. He also assists with implementing practice plans, evaluating opponents, and preparing the team for competition throughout the season.
Hynes takes great pride in being a person of integrity, character, and accountability. His goal as a coach extends beyond helping athletes become better players — he's equally committed to helping them grow into confident, respectful, and responsible young adults. The values he developed through military service and a lifetime in athletics — discipline, teamwork, leadership, commitment, and respect — continue to guide everything he does on and off the field, and inform his broader coaching philosophy of creating a positive, competitive environment where student-athletes are challenged to reach their full potential while representing Norfolk State with pride.
