Cornell Brown enters his second overall season at Norfolk State in 2026 as the Spartans' Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Line Coach, bringing more than 20 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and professional levels, along with a distinguished seven-year NFL playing career highlighted by a victory in Super Bowl XXXV with the Baltimore Ravens.
Brown arrives in Norfolk after spending the 2025 season at Eastern Michigan, where he coached the Eagles' defensive tackles. Prior to his time in Ypsilanti, he served as defensive line coach at Bowling Green during the 2024 campaign, helping the Falcons produce one of the Mid-American Conference's most disruptive defensive fronts. Bowling Green recorded 33 sacks and 71 tackles for loss, while Anthony Hawkins posted career highs with 43 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 5.0 sacks under Brown's guidance.
Before returning to the collegiate ranks, Brown coached professionally with the New Orleans Breakers of the USFL in 2023 and the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League in 2022. His Stampeders defensive line led the CFL with 56 sacks, while Shawn Lemon earned Western Defensive Player of the Year honors after recording 14 sacks. Brown also served as defensive line coach at Tarleton State in 2021 and spent four seasons (2017-20) at Marshall, where he helped build one of the nation's top defenses. During the 2020 season, the Thundering Herd ranked first nationally in scoring defense while finishing among the country's top five in total defense, rushing defense, and red zone defense.
This marks Brown's second stint with the Spartans after serving as Norfolk State's defensive coordinator in 2016. His coaching résumé also includes six seasons at Virginia Tech, where he coached linebackers after beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant and director of high school relations. Internationally, Brown coached in NFL Europe, helping lead the Frankfurt Galaxy to the 2006 World Bowl championship.
A standout player at Virginia Tech, Brown was a two-time First Team All-American and the 1995 Football News National Defensive Player of the Year, finishing his career with 36 sacks — the second-most in Hokies history. He was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 1997 NFL Draft and played seven seasons in the NFL with the Ravens and Oakland Raiders. Brown appeared in 108 career games and was a member of Baltimore's legendary defense that captured Super Bowl XXXV following the 2000 season.
A native of Lynchburg, Virginia, Brown earned both his bachelor's degree in housing, interior design and resource management (2000) and his master's degree in academics (2006) from Virginia Tech. He has been inducted into both the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Brown is the father of one son, Enzo.
