Spartans Start Slow in Battle of the Bay Loss

NORFOLK, Va. –  The Norfolk State football team struggled to get things going offensively on Saturday against Hampton, falling 37-7 in the Battle of the Bay at William "Dick" Price Stadium.

Norfolk State wideout Jahee Blake made the first touchdown catch of his collegiate career in the loss, hauling in a 26-yard toss from quarterback Jalen Daniels.

Pirates quarterback Chris Zellous completed 20-of-25 passes for 185 yards, while running back Elijah Burris totaled 77 yards on the ground. Sophomore linebacker AJ Richardson paced Norfolk State on defense, totaling 12 tackles while Terique Miles added 10.

Hampton started the game with a lengthy, lengthy drive to sap some energy from Norfolk State's defense. The Pirates went 70 yards in 18 plays, draining eight minutes and four seconds off the clock before a successful field goal attempt.

After a three-and-out on Norfolk State's opening possession, Hampton marched down the field with a strong run game, scoring a touchdown before missing the extra point to take a 9-0 lead.

A defensive penalty put Hampton in NSU territory a few minutes later. The Pirates converted on a third-and-long opportunity with a 28-yard pass to set up the team's second touchdown score of the day.

Hampton went into the second half with a 16-0 lead. The visiting squad extended its lead by taking advantage of a short field, picking up a rushing touchdown from Zellous at the end of the third quarter.

The Spartans finally got their offense rolling at the start of the final period. Kevon King got things going with a powerful rush, with 15 yards added on after from a Hampton personal foul. The Pirates committed a roughing the passer infraction on the next play, pushing Norfolk State forward.

Facing third and six, Daniels stepped up to make a comfortable pass to a wide-open Blake for the latter's first collegiate touchdown.
