Brandon Bowman scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds, and Georgetown pulled away in overtime for a 78-70 win over visiting Norfolk State on Tuesday night at the MCI Center.
It was the second straight near-miss for NSU (3-6) against a team from the BIG EAST. The Spartans fell 63-58 at Rutgers on Dec. 18, and Tuesday's loss made them 0-8 all-time against teams from that conference.
Calvin Brown (Mitchellville, Md.) drove in for a layup to tie the game at 61 with eight seconds left in regulation, forcing OT. But GU took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Darrel Owens on its first possession in OT. The Hoyas (7-3) made 6 of their 7 shots in the extra stanza.
GU led by as many as 14 points in the first half. The Hoyas shot 58 percent from the floor in the opening period and took advantage of
Chakowby Hicks’ foul trouble. NSU’s All-MEAC guard and D.C. native sat the final 16 minutes of the first half after picking up two quick fouls.
NSU, down 35-25 at the half, gradually climbed back into the game early in the second half.
Ryan Grier (Chesapeake, Va.) hit two early 3-pointers and
Curtis Bunn (Washington, D.C.) made one to start a 10-0 run that put NSU ahead 47-45 with 9:44 left.
The game was nip-and-tuck the rest of the way. NSU went ahead 57-54 on a 3-point play by Hicks with 2:42 left. GU’s Ashanti Cook answered with a trey to tie it, starting a 7-0 Hoyas’ spurt that ended with them ahead 61-57 with 1:21 left in regulation.
The Spartans fought back again, getting two free throws from Hicks. Later, Brown took an inbounds pass and scored with eight seconds left to send the game into OT.
Bowman took over, scoring eight of his team's 17 points in the extra period. He was 11-of-17 from the floor for the game, and added four blocks and four steals. Jeff Green added 15 points and eight rebounds, Owens had 14 points, and Cook had 13.
Hicks led NSU with 17 points despite playing just 22 of the game’s 45 minutes. He also contributed four steals. Each of the other four Spartan starters also scored in double figures.
Karandick Ogunride (Baton Rouge, La.) had 12 points, Grier and Brown had 11 each, and
Tony Murphy (Paterson, N.J.) had 10. Brown added a career-high 12 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Tuesday marked the first game NSU played without head coach
Dwight Freeman, who is unable to travel due to a medical condition. It was also the third of a season-long seven-game NSU road stretch, which continues on Sunday at Miami (Fla.) with a 2:30 p.m. game.
"Coach Freeman has put in a good system for this team, and our guys did a good job tonight of competing," said assistant coach
Rodney Martin, the acting head coach for road games while Freeman is out. "We expect to be able to win these games, so there are no moral victories."
