Jim Farrell pitched six scoreless innings to win his first game of the year and lead Penn State to a 10-1 win over Norfolk State on Saturday at
Marty L. Miller Baseball Field.
Farrell gave up five hits, walked one and struck out three. He was relieved by Josh Palm, who pitched the final three innings and struck out four.
The Nittany Lions struck for five runs in the top of the first, all off NSU starter
T.J. Starkey (Virginia Beach, Va./Emmanuel College). Starkey walked four in a row to force in one run, and Travis Laird had a two-run single to highlight the inning.
That was all Farrell would need. NSU managed just eight hits for the game, two of those by
Chris Galambus (Fairfax, Va./Greensboro College). He knocked in
Juan Serrano (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) in the ninth with a single.
Chris Blotter (Newport News, Va./Menchville) pitched well in relief of Starkey, going 7 1/3 innings and giving up just two earned runs.
The teams play tomorrow at noon.
