NORFOLK, Va. — Jarne Gleaton hit .200 with eight digs and a team-high nine kills as the South Carolina State volleyball team earned its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win of the season with a 3-0 defeat of Norfolk State on Friday night at Echols Hall. The Lady Bulldogs won the match 25-18, 25-19, 25-21.
SCSU (6-18, 1-2 MEAC) jumped out to early leads in each of the three sets, but NSU (3-19, 1-3) put up a fight the entire way. In set 1, a service ace by Angie Clewis (Glen Heights, Tex.) put NSU up 11-10, but the Lady Bulldogs tied the game on a kill by Bria Brimmer and did not trail the rest of the way.
In the second set, SCSU took an early 7-2 lead, but the Spartans came back and tied it at 15-all on a kill by Shardonay Blueford (Chesapeake, Va.). Elayne Greer (Bakersfield, Calif.) followed with a service error and the Lady Bulldogs went on a 9-4 run to end the second set.
Set 3 was close from the beginning with the two teams trading point-for-point. The Spartans took a two-point lead, 20-18, on a kill by Breanna Allums (Channelview, Tex.), but a service error by Blueford and a kill by Gleaton tied the score at 20-all. Clewis put NSU up 21-20 with a kill, but another Spartan error forced the 10th tie of the set, 21-21. SCSU was able to hold off the Spartans in the final minutes of the set to win the match.
For SCSU, Brimmer and Tiffane' Jackson each had five kills. Brimmer added four digs and a match-high 18 assists.
Greer led the Spartans with nine kills and had two digs and two blocks (one solo). Aurelia Isham (Lancaster, Tex.) had seven kills, while Blueford had three kills and 10 digs.
The Spartans continue their MEAC slate with a 3 p.m. matchup with Bethune-Cookman on Sunday at Echols Hall.
