WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Norfolk State volleyball team won its fourth consecutive match with a 3-1 nonconference win over Winston-Salem State on Sunday at the C.E. Gaines Center. The Spartans won the match 25-22, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20. With the win, NSU improves to 7-19 on the season, while WSSU fell to 4-17.
The Spartans took the first set, but the Lady Rams evened the score by winning the second set. NSU limited WSSU to 15 points in set 3 and 20 in the final set to take the match.
The teams played a very even match, with the Spartans hitting .171 with 40 kills and 36 digs. The Lady Rams tallied 42 kills and 35 digs while hitting .141. WSSU had 10 service aces compared to NSU's five, but the Spartan defense had 55 digs compared to the Lady Rams' 46.
Annika Barnwell led all players with 14 kills and added four aces, seven digs and 2.5 blocks (one solo) for the Lady Rams. Asia Carr had 17 assists and Erica Cole had 15 digs.
Breanna Allums (Channelview, Tex.) led the Spartan offense with nine kills. Nicole Kessner(Blacksburg, Va.) had a double-double of 28 assists and 14 digs and added five kills and two aces.
The Spartans return home to host James Madison at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Gill Gym. The match has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Night. The Spartans will wear pink jerseys and fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness.
