NORFOLK, Va. – Ashlee Burbage had a game-high 17 points off the bench to lead the visiting Delaware State Lady Hornets to an 81-55 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Norfolk State on Saturday evening at Echols Hall.
With the win, Delaware State improved to 13-12 on the season and 8-3 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 4-17, 1-10.
The Lady Hornets dominated the game from the beginning by scoring 42 points, grabbing 19 rebounds, and forcing 15 Spartan turnovers in the first half.
NSU started the second half on a 15-5 run to get within 10, 47-37, at the 14:33 mark but DSU turned up the defense and limited the Spartans to just eight points for the rest of the game.
DSU shot 56.9 percent (29-of-51) from the field for the game and had 32 rebounds, 17 assists and 15 steals. NSU was 16-of-43 (37.2 percent) from the floor with six blocks ands six steals.
Selena Galloway and Keyhana Wakefield had 12 points apiece for the Lady Hornets, while Raquel Collier contributed 11 points. Wakefield also had five rebounds and five assists.
Tashawna Higgins (Toronto, Ontario) led NSU with 17 points and had five rebounds and four steals. Tiffany Gadsden (Columbia, S.C.), who returned from serving a six-game suspension, had game-highs of six rebounds and five blocks.
Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.), the Spartans' leading scorer, was held to just two points, ending her double-figure scoring streak at seven games.
The Spartans return to Echols Hall on Monday for a 6 p.m. matchup against Maryland Eastern Shore. The team's lone senior, Mo'Nique Redhead (Toronto, Ontario), will be honored in the Senior Night activities prior to the game.
