Maryland Eastern Shore Hands NSU Women 4th Straight Loss

NORFOLK, Va. – The Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team handed Norfolk State its fourth consecutive loss on Monday night, downing the Spartans 84-65 at Echols Hall.

A layup by Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) with 15:27 left in the first half tied the game at 9-9, but UMES (15-10, 8-4 MEAC) took control and went into halftime with a 20-point lead, 44-24.

Despite scoring 41 points in the second half, NSU (4-8, 1-11) could not to outdo the Lady Hawks.

UMES shot 47.5 percent for the game (29-of-61) and outrebounded NSU 45-31. The Lady Hawks scored 35 points on 28 Spartan turnovers and had 21 second-chance points. The Spartans hit 23 of their 60 shots (38.4 percent) and forced 28 turnovers, but only had four second-chance points.

April McBride, Tiffany Reid, and Queenique Tyler all had 16 points for UMES. McBride led the defense with a game-high 13 rebounds, while Reid had 10. Casey Morton contributed 15 points and hit all 13 of her free throws.

The Spartans were led by Payne with 22 points. Ebony Gibbs (Petersburg, Va.) had 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Tiffany Gadsden (Columbia, S.C.) had six points, five rebounds, and a game-high five blocks.

The Spartans begin a five-game road trip when they travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on South Carolina State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
