Despite Tate’s 33 Points, Hampton Passes NSU 82-61

Tate Scored 20 of NSU's 33 Points in the Second Half

HAMPTON, Va. – Norfolk State freshman forward Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) scored a game- and career-high 33 points, but it was not enough as the Lady Pirates of Hampton University downed NSU 82-61 on Saturday afternoon at the HU Convocation Center.

Tate connected on 12 of her 17 shots from the field, was 9-of-12 from the free-throw line and scored 20 of NSU's 33 points in the second half.

NSU (5-20, 1-13 MEAC) struck first and took its largest lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) with 19:36 left in the first half. Hampton (15-12, 8-6) then went on a 19-0 run over the next 4:03 to take a 19-3 lead.

The Spartans could get no closer than 17, 41-24, in the first half and the Lady Pirates went into halftime with a 54-28 lead.

NSU outscored Hampton 33-28 in the second half, but could not overcome the 26-point first-half deficit.

Hampton outrebounded NSU 74-32. NSU forced 27 Lady Pirate turnovers and had a season-low 10 giveaways.

Ukoh led Hampton with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Rachel Butler had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Ashlee Finley had 10 points and eight boards. Payne was NSU's next leading with nine points.

The Spartans travel to the nation's capital to take one Howard (3-24, 3-12) at 6 p.m. on Monday.
