Spartan Volleyball Falls 3-2 to Arkansas State

CULLOWHEE, N.C.
— Konae Purcell had a match-high 22 kills and hit .300 with five digs as the Arkansas State volleyball team beat Norfolk State 3-2 in the Spartans' final game of the Western Carolina Catamount Classic at the Ramsey Center on Saturday morning. ASU (10-3) won 20-25, 25-18, 20-25, 26-24, 15-6.

NSU (2-13) came out ready in the first set. With the scored tied at 20-all, the Spartan offense tightened and capitalized on two ASU errors. A service ace by Angie Clewis (Glen Heights, Tex.) won the match for NSU.

The Spartans scored first in set 2, but ASU jumped out to quick 5-1 lead and did not trail again. NSU rallied to win the third set, but ASU would give up, pulling off a fourth-set win. It was all ASU in the deciding match as the Spartans were only able to score six points.

For ASU, Cayla Fielder had 14 kills, while Mafo Joelle tallied 13. Kristin Cartalane had a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs.

Four different Spartans had nine kills, including Elayne Greer (Bakersfield, Calif.) who was also in on 10 blocks.

The Spartans have the week off and head to Dover, Del. this weekend to take part in the Delaware State Hornet Invitational. The play Wagner at 3 p.m. and DSU at 7 p.m. on Friday and take on Fairleigh Dickenson at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
