BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior Brett Dodd (San Antonio, Texas) broke his own school record by clearing 14 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault on Saturday at the Virginia Tech Invitational at Rector Field House.
Dodd finished seventh overall in the unseeded portion of the men's pole vault Saturday. He topped his own school record of 14-2 ¾ that he set at last year's MEAC Indoor Championship.
Freshman Darris Shelton (Hampton, Va.) and first-year sophomore Josef Tessema (Springfield, Va.) also set personal-bests on Saturday in their first indoor meets at NSU. Shelton jumped 23 feet, 11 inches to take fourth in the long jump. Tessema ran a PR of 4:20.16 to finish third in the mile, less than two seconds behind winner Andrew Revelle of Virginia.
The Spartans also got solid performances from their relay teams, placing second in the distance medley relay, second in the 4x200 and fourth in the 4x400.
NSU returns to Blacksburg for the Hokie Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
