GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Norfolk State men's track standouts
Kendrick Winfield and
Daniel Mathenge each captured first-place finishes, leading the Spartans at the Bill Carson Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Winfield posted a time of 47.59 in the 400 meters, while Mathenge won the 5,000 meters in 14:51.20.
Julian Ward and
Jaycob Linsey each qualified for the 100-meter finals, with Ward finishing fifth (10.56) and Linsey placing sixth (10.53). Winfield also led the Spartans in the 200 meters, finishing fifth in 21.23, while
Christopher Basking placed ninth in 21.48.
Donovan Terry added a sixth-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 49.84.
Jemmel Green paced the Spartans in the 1,500 meters, recording a personal-best time of 3:54.97 to finish fifth.
Ian Kimutai made his NSU outdoor debut with a runner-up finish in the 5,000 meters (14:58.19), while
Basil Koech placed fifth in 16:07.87.
The Spartans turned in a strong performance in the field events, led by
Xavier McGreal in the high jump. McGreal placed second with a leap of 1.95 meters, followed by
Kristopher Stephens in third (1.90 meters) and
Chazden Wilson in seventh (1.85 meters). Stephens also took third in the long jump at 7.20 meters, while McGreal finished sixth (6.50 meters) and Wilson placed 10th (5.97 meters).
Jayshaun Campbell rounded out the meet with a pair of top-10 finishes in the throwing events, placing fourth in the shot put (14.21 meters) and seventh in the discus (41.77 meters).
Norfolk State returns home for the NSU Invitational at William "Dick" Price Stadium on Saturday, April 4.
